The banking journey, spanning nearly four decades, commenced with branch operations.
Next came assignments of Credit Officer at Regional Office as well as Zonal Office; Branch Head of a Rural branch and Branch Head of Bhiwadi Industrial Area branch. The achievements led to elevation to Senior Management Group with which came the most challenging assignment. I was directed to directly assist the Operations Head of the Bank, a la Deputy Head, at Corporate Office. Though under Operations Head butinteracted regularly with the entire Top Managementon various operational issues. Besides major operational issues of various Banking Units, I also handled Credit Portfolio, Frauds, Policy, Re-organization, as well. I was also informally inducted as a member of the Head Office Credit Committee. I was Secretary of two Committees of the Top Management to oversee various aspects of the working of branches / Regional Offices / Zonal Offices. I was also designated as Secretary to the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of the Bank for Monitoring Large Value Frauds.
Next elevation, in 2005, led to another challenging assignment as Regional Manager. I was responsible for the business growth, smooth functioning, implementation of bank’s policies, etc. in branches under my administrative control and located in East Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The business growth in my two years’ stay was nearly Rs.1300 crores. I was, perhaps in recognition of my past track record, called back to Corporate Office to handle the technology based Financial Inclusion Project, even though I had a very limited knowledge of technology. The Project was for all the Associate Banks of SBI with charge given to SBBJ for technology selection, vendor selection, formulation of operational guidelines, etc. Me and my team came out winners and the trial runs were successful. The Project was then taken up for implementation by the Associate Banks and the operational guidelines were also replicated in SBI.
Lastly, the remaining service being less than 2 years and at my request, I was posted to my home town. However, the assignment was yet another challenge as I was made the Head of N.P.A. Recovery for branches located in Delhi and NCR. I completed the assignment with another round of appreciation by the Top Management.
The Banking Journey ended on 31.12.2012 on a successful and satisfactory note.
Next journey, six months after retirement, was in Private Sector when I joined a Company running a Shopping Mall and looking for Retailers and Food Courts to open their outlets in the Mall. Though a lot of effort was put in to attract retailers and food courts, the market sentiments did not support the expectations and the results were luke warm. I left the Company after 1.5 years.
Subsequently, I handled two assignments from two different group of promoters. The First was to study the market scenario, regulations and formalities required and help in setting-up an Asset Reconstruction Company. I had meetings with RBI officials and some ARC officials, known to me, for the purpose. The assignment was completed and handed over to the group of promoters for final move. However, their differing perceptions led to Project being not taken up by them.
The Second was to study the market scenario, the regulations, government policies, and formalities and help in setting up a Housing Finance Company. Detailed discussions were held with officials of ICRA to gather market scenario, some target areas were selected, and prospects were obtained through sources and finally discussions were held with some personnel from existing HFCs, known to me. Discussions were also held with officials of National Housing Bank, the regulatory authority for HFCs. Discussions were also held with a prospective Investor for participation in the Project. The assignment was then handed over to the group of Promotors for taking the final call.
